Subjects and Elements:

I believe pencil brushes have no fixed subject restrictions. They can be used to draw various subjects such as scenes, characters, animals, still life, and even Chinese-style art. As shown in the examples above, I’ve used pencil brushes to draw scenes, characters, still life, etc. I’ve also used them in my picture book illustrations, and I plan to use them for Chinese-style themes in the future.

Texture and Quality:

Pencil brushes can create textures with graininess and line patterns, which are key to achieving the look of colored pencils. If this texture is not expressed (or is unclear), the pencil quality in the artwork will not feel strong. Specific methods for expressing texture can be found in previous tutorials. However, because pencil brush textures inherently have a grainy quality, some fine details in the artwork may be lost, making them less suitable for highly intricate or sharp images. But I truly love this texture, which is why I’ve been using it frequently recently. In addition to grainy textures, I’ve created many brushes that replicate the effect of pencil hatching for clear linear elements, such as fireworks, grass, tree clusters, and large color blocks on characters. These elements are highly effective for dynamic scenes, such as exploding fireworks, galloping horses, fluttering leaves, or flowing gases and liquids.

Atmosphere:

Some pencil brushes have a blurred edge effect, making them ideal for creating hazy, dreamy, gentle, or cute atmospheres. Additionally, some brushes (version 3.0) are designed to depict glowing or soft objects, such as fireworks and mist.

Style Compatibility:

Beyond texture, the subject matter, elements, composition, modeling, and color palette of the artwork are not affected by the brush. Pencil brushes can be applied to a wide range of styles, including realistic, flat, abstract, Chinese-style, Western, anime, and children’s illustration. You can simply incorporate pencil textures into your existing style. Some users have reported that my brushes have influenced their creative direction, offering new inspiration or motivation. While I’m unsure if this is entirely positive, I’m secretly pleased to feel like I’ve contributed to everyone’s creative process (or perhaps, am a bit of a troublemaker).
